Nagpur, Jan 21 (NationPress) Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has opened up about his international journey, discussing the missed chances and his recent return to the opening position in a video shared by the BCCI on Wednesday. Though he was part of India’s squad that celebrated a historic victory at the T20 World Cup 2024, he did not get the chance to play, describing this period as difficult, yet he felt thankful for being selected in the 15-member team.

“Reflecting on the T20 World Cup 2024, I didn’t participate in any matches. To be honest, it was a rollercoaster ride, and I was struggling to meet my own expectations. However, I was thankful to be included in the fifteen,” Samson shared.

As he reflected on his career path, the Kerala batter noted that his experiences have been characterized by unpredictability, especially in T20 cricket. “My journey is truly unique. You never know when an opportunity will arise. In this format, there are constant fluctuations,” he stated.

Samson also addressed the external pressures that come with playing for the national team. “Ignoring outside opinions is challenging when representing India. I created my own bubble to focus on the finer details. I always believed my time would come,” he added.

The wicketkeeper-batter mentioned that the unexpected chance to open the innings became a pivotal moment in his career. “By God’s grace, this opportunity presented itself unexpectedly. I entered the World Cup team as a middle-order batter, but an opening slot became available. I got to bat in around 10 or 11 innings and made an impact, which earned me a spot in the Indian opening lineup,” Samson explained.

Discussing the inconsistent nature of his international appearances, he expressed that maintaining belief in future opportunities kept him driven. “Many say I haven’t had a long stint, but I view that as a positive indication. After a decade of playing for my country, I still feel incredibly proud to wear this jersey. That pride keeps me motivated,” he expressed.

Samson also touched on his aggressive batting style in T20s, claiming it naturally aligns with the demands of the format. “This format requires a fearless attitude and not dwelling on mistakes. Fortunately, that comes easily to me,” he remarked.

He further emphasized the significance of his relationship with T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, highlighting the value of open communication. “I share a strong bond with Surya. We often exchange ideas and ask questions. Building that connection with the captain is crucial in this format,” Samson noted.

Samson is set to take the field later on Wednesday, opening the innings for India in the first match of the five-match T20I series against New Zealand.
