Sanju Samson Envisions More World Cup Triumphs for India
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 15 (NationPress) Sanju Samson, who was recognized as India’s Player of the Tournament during the victorious 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup campaign, expressed his astonishment each morning as he reflects on the team's achievement on home turf. He firmly believes that India's endless supply of talent will lead to more trophy victories in the future.
"I still find it hard to believe that it has really happened. But looking ahead, I am confident that with the caliber of players emerging in our country, we will see this happening repeatedly in the coming years," Samson stated while speaking to broadcasters at the BCCI awards event in New Delhi on Sunday.
Samson earned the Player of the Tournament title by amassing 321 runs at an impressive strike rate of nearly 200 over five innings, despite not being a regular starter. His remarkable performances included scoring an unbeaten 97 in the crucial Super Eight match against the West Indies, followed by scores of 89 in both the semi-final against England and the final against New Zealand.
"One can only dream about their aspirations, and although you may not know the exact path to get there, my life and career serve as a testament to that. A few years ago, I aspired to win a World Cup for my nation, and while the journey had its unique twists, I enjoyed every moment of it," he shared.
"Initially, my focus was entirely on myself during the New Zealand series. However, during the World Cup, the emphasis shifted to the team’s needs. From the moment of the Zimbabwe game, I realized that everyone was counting on me to make a contribution. I had a specific role to fulfill, and that realization boosted my confidence. I knew I had to give my best for the team," he elaborated.
Samson wasn't the only underdog story from India's victory. Fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, who was not included in the original squad, joined as a replacement for the injured Harshit Rana. He described his surprising journey to securing a second T20 World Cup winners' medal as miraculous. "I wasn't part of the initial team, but here I am, having played in two World Cup-winning squads. I consider it a miracle," he remarked.
