India head coach Gautam Gambhir has issued a sharp rallying call to the Shubman Gill-led Test squad, urging the side to arrive fully prepared — mentally and physically — from the very first session of the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka, beginning in Galle on 15 August. The instruction came as the Indian team commenced its preparatory camp at Colombo's NCC ground on Wednesday.

Gambhir's Message to the Dressing Room

In a video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on its official social media handles, Gambhir addressed the squad with characteristic directness. 'Guys, we know what's in front of us. We know what we are playing for. We can do the volume, we can push our limits, we can tick all the boxes. Come 15th morning, whether we are batting first, or whether we are bowling first, we're absolutely ready with every answer, every question that's thrown at us and every answer we're ready to give. So make sure we tick all the boxes from now on,' he said.

Series Schedule and Practice Fixture

India are scheduled to play a three-day practice match at the NCC ground from 7 to 9 August before travelling south to Galle. The first Test gets underway on 15 August, with the second and final Test set for the historic Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) in Colombo from 23 to 27 August. The timing carries significance — the opener falls on India's Independence Day, adding a symbolic edge to the occasion.

WTC Standings Add Context

The series carries meaningful World Test Championship implications. India currently sit fifth in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings with a points percentage of 48.150, while Sri Lanka occupy sixth place at 41.67 PCT. A series win would lift India's standing ahead of the next cycle of fixtures and strengthen their case for a WTC final berth.

New Faces Welcomed to the Setup

Gambhir used the team huddle to formally welcome two debutant-eligible players and a new support staff member. Off-spin bowling all-rounder Saransh Jain and pacer Auqib Nabi — who was instrumental in Jammu and Kashmir's Ranji Trophy triumph last season — received personal acknowledgements from the coach. Newly appointed fielding coach Subhadeep Ghosh, referred to as 'Joy', was also welcomed into the fold.

'Saransh, congratulations, you've worked extremely hard to be here. Make sure that you make your family and country proud whenever you get that opportunity,' Gambhir said. Of Nabi, he added: 'You had a phenomenal last season, and made J&K win the Ranji Trophy, which is a great achievement.'
