New Delhi, Oct 19 (NationPress) Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his confidence in Indian icons Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to make a strong comeback in the second ODI against Australia in Adelaide following their unsatisfactory performances in Perth.

Gavaskar remarked that it would not be surprising if these senior players achieve substantial scores, emphasizing that it's merely a question of time and practice before they find their form again.

Kohli and Rohit returned to international cricket after a seven-month hiatus but faced challenges on Perth's demanding pitch, managing scores of 0 and 8, respectively. Australia took advantage of India's batting collapse, clinching a comfortable seven-wicket victory and establishing a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Gavaskar defended the duo, highlighting that adapting to Perth's bounce after such a long absence was always going to be a tough task.

“They were competing on one of the most bouncy pitches in Australia. It wasn’t going to be straightforward, especially for players who haven’t engaged in international cricket for several months. Even Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, who play regularly, found it challenging,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying by India Today.

The former Indian captain retained a positive outlook regarding India's chances, noting that once Kohli and Rohit spend additional time in the middle and on the nets, they will quickly regain their touch.

“India remains a very strong team. Don’t be shocked if Rohit and Kohli score heavily in the next two matches. The more they play and practice, the sooner they'll find their rhythm. Once they start accumulating runs, India’s total could be 300, or even beyond,” Gavaskar added.

The second ODI in Adelaide presents optimal conditions for a revival, especially for Kohli, who has an impressive record at the venue. In four ODIs at the Adelaide Oval, Kohli has amassed 244 runs at an average of 61, including two centuries. His Test performance there is even more outstanding, with 537 runs in five matches at an average of 53.70, featuring three hundreds.

Point of View

The perspective remains that while challenges exist, the potential for Kohli and Rohit to dominate in the upcoming matches is high. Their experience and past performances suggest resilience. Support for these players is crucial as they navigate the pressures of international cricket.
