Leipzig, Jan 24 (NationPress) Germany has officially prolonged Julian Nagelsmann’s contract as head coach on Friday during a celebration commemorating the 125-year anniversary of the German Football Association (DFB). This new contract extends until 2028, which includes the forthcoming European Championship in Great Britain and Ireland.
The former head coach of FC Bayern took charge of the national team in September 2023 and has successfully guided them to the quarterfinals of the 2024 Euros.
"When I joined the DFB in September 2023, I never anticipated being the national coach beyond the home European Championship. Our primary objective was to excel in the tournament. However, I also couldn't foresee how much the national team resonates with the people of Germany and the emotional connection it fosters.
“The positive responses that we receive daily, not just from me but from the entire team, indicate that we are moving in the right direction together. This journey isn't finished yet. Together - fans, team, and coaching staff - we have built something significant that we are eager to advance further. We aim to secure titles together," Nagelsmann stated.
Earlier, the DFB executive committee, the supervisory board, and the shareholders' assembly of DFB GmbH & Co. KG unanimously supported the proposal from DFB president Bernd Neuendorf to extend Nagelsmann's contract, which was initially set to last until the end of the upcoming FIFA World Cup in 2026 across the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Nagelsmann succeeded Hansi Flick, who is currently the head coach at Barcelona. Since Nagelsmann took over, Germany has shown significant improvement, playing 19 matches with 11 wins, 5 draws, and 3 losses.
"It’s not only the fans in Germany who have wished for Julian Nagelsmann to continue beyond the next World Cup after his successful European Championship performances at home last summer. The players and the entire DFB staff have also been motivated by Julian's inspiring approach over the last 16 months to achieve our shared goals. During this period, he has developed a strong rapport with the fans, players, and the support team, re-establishing unity.
"This unity is essential for success. We are excited to collaborate with Julian for the long term, pursuing our ambitious sporting goals with the same passion as before," expressed Rudi Voller, director of the senior national team.
