Manchester, July 27 (NationPress) Indian captain Shubman Gill continues to make history with a remarkable and resilient 103 runs against England at Old Trafford. By securing his fourth century in as many matches, Gill has equaled the iconic Don Bradman for the most centuries as a captain in a Test series, also becoming the first player to score four centuries in his inaugural Test series as captain.
Starting from 87, an uneven delivery from Ben Stokes struck Gill on his previously injured right thumb, bouncing onto his helmet. The 25-year-old persevered and marked the first century by an Indian at Old Trafford in 35 years, since Sachin Tendulkar achieved this feat in 1990. Gill also matched Virat Kohli and Sunil Gavaskar for the most hundreds by an Indian in a single Test series.
This was the first occasion where he took more than 200 balls to reach a century, achieving three figures off his 228th ball today; his slowest previous century was off 199 balls during the first innings of the Edgbaston Test.
He made history at Edgbaston with twin centuries - 269 and 161 - accumulating 430 runs in the Test, the second-highest match total in Test history.
In a surprising turn, it was Jofra Archer who struck with the new ball. Gill, unfortunately, had a moment of distraction and aimed at a delivery outside off, edging it to Jamie Smith. At this point, India finds itself in a challenging position at 223/4, still trailing by 88 runs.
With vice-captain Rishabh Pant facing an injury to his right foot from a yorker by Chris Woakes, all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar must forge a significant partnership to strive for a draw.
