New Delhi, July 7 (NationPress) Shubman Gill's extraordinary performance in the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy has led to a remarkable series of records being shattered, as he surpassed legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli.
India triumphed over England by 336 runs, marking their inaugural Test victory at Edgbaston, a venue where they had previously not secured a Test win. This victory in Birmingham is also noted as India’s largest away Test win by runs, as well as Gill's first Test victory as captain. He showcased his batting prowess with scores of 269 and 161, totaling a record 430 runs, which is just 26 runs shy of Graham Gooch's record of 456 runs in a single Test, set against India in 1990.
His score of 269 in the first innings stands as the highest individual Test score by an Indian player in England. Additionally, he set a record for the highest score by an Indian captain in Tests, surpassing Kohli's unbeaten 254 against South Africa in Pune in 2019.
Moreover, he became the second player to achieve two scores of over 150 in a Test, following Allan Border, who scored 150* and 153 against Pakistan in Lahore in 1980.
Gill's 269 is now the highest score by an Indian batter in Tests played outside of Asia, overtaking Tendulkar's previous record of 241 not out at the SCG in 2004. This also marks only the second Test double century by an Indian captain on foreign soil, with Kohli being the first to achieve this against the West Indies in 2016.
In this remarkable performance, he broke a 21-year-old record previously held by Tendulkar for the highest score by an Indian player in overseas conditions (excluding other Asian countries).
Gill has been in phenomenal form throughout the first two matches of the series, amassing 585 runs at an impressive average of 146.25 in just four innings, making him the leading run-scorer in the series.
With 585 runs, he has set the record for the highest runs in the first two Tests as captain, surpassing Kohli's tally of 449 runs. Furthermore, it is the second-highest total in the first two matches of a series, trailing only Graeme Smith's 621 runs in England in 2003. He also achieved the milestone of scoring the most runs in a debut series as captain.
Gill is the first Indian and just the fifth player to participate in four century partnerships in a Test. The other players are Hanif Mohammad (vs West Indies in 1958), Graham Gooch (vs India in 1990), Mark Taylor (vs Pakistan in 1998), and Joe Root (vs Pakistan in 2016).
He forged a 203-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja for the seventh wicket and followed it up with a 144-run partnership with Washington Sundar in the first innings of the Edgbaston Test. Additionally, Gill was part of two century partnerships with Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja in the second innings.
Gill has also become the second Indian to score centuries in both innings of a Test in England, following Rishabh Pant, who accomplished this in the series opener at Headingley.
The 25-year-old is now the third Indian captain to record centuries in both innings of a Test, joining the ranks of Gavaskar and Kohli. Gavaskar scored 107 and 182 not out against the West Indies at Eden Gardens in 1978, while Kohli recorded 115 and 141 against Australia in Adelaide in 2014.
