New Delhi, July 18 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar expressed that Shubman Gill, while engaging in a heated exchange with Zak Crawley, did not translate that intensity into positive batting results during the Lord’s Test, which India lost by 22 runs.
The verbal sparring between Gill and Crawley added a thrilling element to the conclusion of day three, but when Gill came out to bat on day four, chasing a target of 193, he seemed uneasy and was dismissed for just six runs by Brydon Carse.
“Virat Kohli thrived in such situations, becoming a more formidable batter,” noted Manjrekar. “However, I find myself questioning the direction in which Shubman Gill is heading.”
“It appeared that the exchange had little impact on Gill's performance. He looked hesitant at the crease, especially considering the sound from the stump mic revealed some personal jabs.”
“This encounter could be a first for Gill, as Indian players often receive a warm welcome from foreign teams. He seemed unprepared for such challenges,” added Manjrekar while speaking to ESPNCricinfo.
Manjrekar also suggested that Gill might have shown his aggressive demeanor at Lord’s simply due to his remarkable scores of 269 and 161 in the preceding Test at Birmingham. “If he had that fiery side, we would have seen it earlier. Did he only exhibit it because of newfound confidence after a Test victory and scoring heavily?”
“In contrast, Virat Kohli was always eager for a confrontation, even before becoming captain. This trait was evident in Kohli's earlier games, but I haven’t observed the same from Shubman Gill,” he concluded.
