New Delhi, Aug 12 (NationPress) Former New Zealand all-rounder Jesse Ryder asserts that India's newly-appointed Test captain Shubman Gill has gained invaluable experience from the recent tour of England.
The Indian batsman had an extraordinary performance in July, scoring a total of 754 runs in the five-match series against England, which included a double century and two additional centuries, achieving an impressive average of 75.40. His remarkable run tally ranks as the second-highest in the history of a WTC tournament, earning him the Player of the Series accolade. Under Gill's captaincy, India demonstrated resilience by coming back from a deficit to ultimately draw the series at 2-2.
In an exclusive interview with IANS, Ryder praised the wealth of talent emerging in India and shared his thoughts on Gill's inaugural series as captain.
“There's a substantial amount of talent emerging, especially in India. The population is vast, and Shubman Gill is a young player. The England tour would certainly have been a valuable learning experience for him,” Ryder stated.
After trailing 1-2 post the Lord’s Test, India showcased remarkable determination to level the series 2-2. This comeback was bolstered by the exceptional bowling of Mohammed Siraj, who concluded the series as the leading wicket-taker with 23 wickets across five Tests, delivering outstanding figures of 4-86 and 5-125 in the fifth and final Test at The Oval, despite the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, who missed the match due to workload management.
When asked about India's next potential star, Ryder identified Yashasvi Jaiswal, who began the series with a commanding century at Headingley and finished with a resilient 118 in the second innings of the decisive match at The Oval. Overall, the left-handed opener amassed 411 runs throughout the five matches.
“India is brimming with talent, with emerging stars like Jaiswal making an impact,” he added.
