New Delhi, June 19 (NationPress) As India gears up for its five-match Test series against England in Leeds, former head coach Gary Kirsten expressed his belief that Shubman Gill possesses the essential qualities to become an exceptional leader, emphasizing that he is someone who follows through on his promises.
Gill will be under intense scrutiny as a revamped Indian squad commences its Test series against England at Headingley on Friday. He has taken over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma, who recently retired from Test cricket.
With the retirement of Virat Kohli from Tests, Gill is also tasked with the added responsibility of filling the veteran batsman's position at number four in the batting lineup. Kirsten had the opportunity to closely observe Gill during his tenure as batting coach for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL.
“I believe Shubman is on the path to becoming a remarkable leader. He’s an astute cricketer with a solid understanding of the game and his own skills. He’s immensely talented and a genuinely good person, which is crucial,” said Kirsten.
“Leadership roles bring pressure, and your capabilities will be tested. For any young leader, the ability to adapt, learn, and grow is constantly scrutinized. However, I am confident that he possesses all the fundamental qualities to excel as a leader,” he added.
“What I admire about Shubman is his ability to practice what he preaches. He is very organized and diligent in his training and preparation, setting a strong example for his teammates. I believe he’s ready to make a significant impact on the international stage,” Kirsten stated on JioHotstar.
To date, Gill has played only three Tests in England, with an average below 15. Former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden voiced his support for Gill to develop as both a batsman and leader during this demanding Test series in England.
“Shubman has enormous shoes to fill. He needs to establish his presence in Test cricket. His experience in England is quite limited. Building a legacy takes time, as seen with Virat Kohli, India’s most successful Test captain in terms of win percentage, so comparisons aren't entirely fair,” he remarked.
“Shubman is an exceptional player with all the qualities needed to thrive in English conditions. We’ve already witnessed his leadership potential across various teams, and there’s no doubt he can grow into this role,” he concluded.
