Deepak Gohain, the Purple Cap holder in the Assam Premier League (APL) 2026, attributed his standout bowling run to experience and adaptability after his match-winning performance helped Guwahati Royals defeat Dibrugarh Warriors and climb to the top of the points table on Monday, 11 August. The left-arm spinner now leads the tournament's bowling charts with 12 wickets from just five matches.

Gohain's Numbers Tell the Story

The 33-year-old spinner has been the most economical and effective bowler in the competition so far, maintaining an economy rate of 5.00 and a remarkable average of 8.33. His best figures in the tournament stand at 3/11. The consistency has been built, according to Gohain, on two pillars: pace variation and hitting the right length.

'My mindset is simple. I try to keep varying my bowling, especially because pace variation is very important on this wicket. If you can do that properly and hit the right length, as a bowler, you get help from the wicket,' he said.

He also identified a specific match-winning tactic: 'The one thing that has worked consistently for me is cramping the batters for room to get the better of them.'

A Historic Win Over Dibrugarh

The victory over Dibrugarh Warriors carried additional weight for Guwahati Royals, as it was the first time the franchise had beaten this particular opponent. Gohain described it as a significant psychological milestone for the squad.

'It's been a big boost for the team. We executed our plans in this contest, and we've been focusing on doing the basics right. That helped us get the win against Dibrugarh,' he said.

The result lifted Guwahati Royals to eight points from five matches. Both Guwahati and Dibrugarh now have four wins from five games, with the Royals edging ahead on Net Run Rate.

Gohain was candid about how his years of competitive cricket have sharpened his reading of conditions and batsmen. 'Experience helps a lot. When you are playing a big tournament like this, the experience is useful in match situations. You can understand how to bowl on which wicket, how to bowl to which batsman, and that helps the team as well,' he reflected.

The spinner also underlined the team's deliberate approach to not getting ahead of themselves. 'We are taking it one match at a time. We don't want to look too far ahead. The captain ensures that the team's mindset remains aligned and there is no pressure on anyone,' he concluded.
