New Delhi, Jan 18 (NationPress) Delhi cricketer Ayush Badoni asserts that his choice to start bowling two years ago has turned him into an all-rounder, playing a pivotal role in securing his first call-up to the Indian national team. The 26-year-old was included in India's ODI roster for the current three-match series against New Zealand after Washington Sundar was sidelined due to an injury following the inaugural ODI.
The series is currently tied at 1-1, with both teams gearing up for the decisive match at the Holkar Stadium in Indore this Sunday. Although Badoni did not make the playing XI in the second ODI that India lost, he remains optimistic about an opportunity to showcase his skills, especially given his recent excellent form.
“I was part of the Delhi team and was captaining it when I learned about my selection. We had a crucial match against Vidarbha the next day. I mentioned to my roommate Priyansh that I might be going, so he could take over as captain. It was an overwhelming moment, and I feel genuinely grateful for this opportunity,” Badoni shared in a video posted by bcci.tv.
When asked about notifying his family and friends, he said, “I received the call late at night, so I couldn’t inform them until the morning announcement. They were thrilled and proud. The coaches and teammates welcomed me warmly, which I appreciated. I’ve played alongside or against many of them before, so it was nice to reconnect.”
Badoni also shared that he started as a pure batter but shifted his focus to bowling two years ago. This transition allowed him to become an all-rounder, which ultimately contributed to his selection for the national team. “My preparation has been straightforward. I used to focus solely on batting, but I’ve dedicated significant time to my bowling over the past two years. I believe I can contribute to the team by taking wickets and being effective with my bowling. This all-rounder role has certainly benefited me,” he stated.
Reflecting on his time with senior players in the squad, Badoni mentioned that he's had experiences playing with or against many of them in domestic or franchise cricket and always seeks to learn from them.
“Many of our senior players are legends in the sport, and I strive to learn from them, whether it’s while batting or bowling. This enhances my game, and I enjoy spending time with them. I have fun with Harshit, and I also enjoy camaraderie with Arshdeep and Shreyas. It’s a fantastic experience being with them,” Badoni concluded.
