Mumbai, Nov 12 (NationPress) As South Africa gears up for their two-Test series against India starting in Kolkata this Friday, former captain Graeme Smith emphasized the necessity for the visitors’ top order to effectively counter Jasprit Bumrah’s formidable opening spells before India’s spinners take the field.

In his remarks before the series, the SA20 League Commissioner noted that both sides will be cautious about losing early wickets to fast bowlers, as it could significantly skew the match before spin becomes a consideration.

“It’s not often discussed in cricket, especially in the subcontinent, but the South African team will certainly be strategizing on how to manage spin,” Smith expressed. “Establishing a strong start with a solid top three is essential — nothing is more detrimental than losing two or three wickets early, only to face spinners when you are already under pressure.”

“Dealing with Bumrah right from the start will be critical, along with Kagiso Rabada for India. They are both world-class bowlers with impressive Test records,” he added.

Smith, who captained South Africa to a Test series victory in India back in 2000, remarked on the importance of Kagiso Rabada setting an early tone with the new ball. “This is a significant test for KG... coming to the subcontinent. He is undoubtedly the leader of the attack, and how he sets the tone with that new ball will be vital for Temba Bavuma and the team,” Smith mentioned.

He urged South Africa’s batting lineup to perform well in the first Test, highlighting the challenges of making comebacks in Indian conditions. “Many players have experience from the A-team games and the recent Pakistan Test series, which is crucial. Your game and mindset must adapt to the conditions,” Smith said.

“I believe that Kolkata, where the first Test will be held, generally offers good batting conditions. You can score well, and if the stadium is full, it will definitely motivate the South Africans to perform,” he added.

Smith noted that South Africa’s spin duo of Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer could be effective, but the handling of reverse swing by the pacers will also be critical.

“South Africa has arrived with a strong bowling lineup, particularly in the spin department. Maharaj and Harmer are certainly capable of causing problems,” he stated. “They can control the game and possess wicket-taking abilities with spin — and it will be interesting to see how Rabada and others manage reverse swing.”

The former skipper also shared a humorous moment regarding his ex-teammate Morne Morkel, who is now part of India’s coaching staff. “He’s an adversary now. Morne is on the other side,” Smith joked.

Supporting Smith’s insights, former captain Faf du Plessis stressed that a solid start would be essential for the Proteas. “I believe that starting well generally gives you a better chance of success here, and as a batting unit, it builds confidence when you have runs on the board,” du Plessis noted.

“The remainder of the series feels more manageable compared to starting under pressure with a low score and losing the first Test. The expectation would be that it’s going to be a tough tour for the team,” he added.

Du Plessis, however, expressed optimism about South Africa’s recent Test performance. “The players have performed admirably in the subcontinent over the past 12 to 14 months. They have fared well in Pakistan,” he stated. “I anticipate wickets that favor turning conditions. It seems like the guys have really put in the effort.”
