New Delhi, Sep 3 (NationPress) Ilkay Gundogan expressed his understanding of Manchester City’s ongoing rebuilding phase and shared his enthusiasm for joining his childhood club, Galatasaray.
This summer, Gundogan became one of the prominent figures to leave the club, joining the ranks of Ederson, Kevin De Bruyne, Kyle Walker, and Manuel Akanji.
“Dear Cityzens, I want to be transparent with you... the reason for my departure is straightforward: I wish to play football as frequently as possible, as it's my greatest passion. Approaching 35, I still feel in excellent shape and believe I can maintain high performance for a Champions League-level team.
“Additionally, I now have the chance to join my childhood favorite team in a country that holds significant meaning for me.
“I fully comprehend and respect that Man City is seeking a fresh start after a remarkable era. I will forever cherish what this magnificent club has done for me throughout the years,” Gundogan stated in a social media update.
During his time with City, Gundogan made 358 appearances in all competitions, netting 65 goals.
He initially signed with City from Borussia Dortmund in July 2016, and during his first tenure in the iconic sky blue, the German midfielder achieved 14 trophies, including a historic Treble of Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League as captain in his final season.
After that unforgettable night in Istanbul, Gundogan transitioned to Barcelona, before rejoining the Blues for the 2024/25 season. Nonetheless, after just one season back in sky blue, he is now set to link up with the Turkish Super Lig champions.
“Much of my time here was extraordinary and remarkably successful. Both the club and the city of Manchester will always occupy a special place in my heart.
“I would like to extend my gratitude to all my teammates, the chairman, everyone behind the scenes, each fan – and especially Pep, who made this incredible journey possible,” he concluded.
