New Delhi, Oct 24 (NationPress) Lewis Hamilton has urged the McLaren teammates, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, to adopt a cut-throat mentality if they want to secure victory over Max Verstappen in the race for the 2025 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship. Hamilton cautioned that the Red Bull ace is primed to “take this from them” unless they match his level of ruthlessness.

With just five races left, the championship battle has intensified into a tight three-way contest. Verstappen's recent run of three victories in four races has narrowed the gap to the leader by 40 points, while Norris trails his teammate Piastri by a mere 14 points as they head into this weekend’s Mexican Grand Prix.

Currently driving for Ferrari, Hamilton shared insights on the challenges posed by competing against a revitalized four-time world champion. Reflecting on his own fierce 2021 rivalry with Verstappen, Hamilton noted, “They’ve both won championships in other series, but competing within a team brings unique challenges. The pressure is immense.”

He continued, “It’s a crucial moment where they must put their blinders on and block out all external noise, given the significant influx of both positive and negative influences.”

According to the 40-year-old, a decisive mental and competitive edge will be essential in the concluding stages. “You must be cut-throat,” Hamilton emphasized. “Max will seize this opportunity if they do not exhibit the same tenacity. They need to push hard and dig deep, as consistency will be vital, especially with Max's recent performances.”

Having experienced numerous championship battles throughout his nearly two-decade career in Formula 1, Hamilton expressed that the ongoing rivalry is a positive development for the sport. “It’s fantastic,” he remarked. “Seeing McLaren leading the constructor's championship and the intra-team competition is thrilling, but adding another team and driver into the mix makes it even more captivating, which is what Formula 1 should embody.”

Both Norris and Verstappen have outshined points leader Piastri in the last four races, raising the stakes for the Australian, who has maintained the championship lead since the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in April. Hamilton noted that Piastri now faces a more demanding psychological struggle as the one being pursued.

“It’s exciting to witness such a significant battle unfolding,” he added. “All three drivers are exceptionally talented. While I can’t predict their behavior, Max’s experience as a four-time champion will play a crucial role. Being the leader is more challenging than being the one chasing.”
