How Did Harmanpreet Kaur Become the Most Successful Captain in Women’s T20Is?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 27 (NationPress) India’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur has made history by becoming the most successful captain in women’s T20 internationals, surpassing the previous record held by former Australia captain Meg Lanning. The 36-year-old downplayed this personal achievement, emphasizing that it was a result of her team's collective efforts.
Harmanpreet reached this significant milestone with India’s commanding eight-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the third T20I of the five-match series at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. This win marked her 77th victory out of 130 matches as captain in this format, eclipsing Lanning’s total of 76 wins from 100 games.
“This is something I never expected. As a captain, one aims for World Cups and series wins, but becoming the most successful T20 captain was beyond my imagination. I’m incredibly thankful and credit goes to my team. Their outstanding performance is the reason for our continued success. This is just the beginning for us. The next big event is the T20 World Cup, and I hope we maintain this winning momentum for Team India,” said Harmanpreet in a video shared by BCCI.
The record is a bright spot in an already remarkable year for the Indian captain. Earlier in November, she guided India to their first Women’s ODI World Cup title, achieving a memorable 52-run victory against South Africa in the final at the Dr. D.Y. Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
Reflecting on the recent win against Sri Lanka, Harmanpreet expressed her satisfaction with the team’s comprehensive performance, noting that the confidence gained would be crucial as the Indian team prepares for the Women’s T20 World Cup set for June 2026.
“This series has been fantastic for all of us. Post-World Cup, we discussed raising our standards and being more aggressive in T20s, especially with the T20 World Cup approaching. I’m really pleased with our overall performance,” Harmanpreet remarked.
“By ensuring all areas in our bowling department are strong, we boost our chances of winning. Today, our position is thanks to our bowlers. All credit to them for their performance in this series,” she added.
India and Sri Lanka are set to clash again on Sunday for the fourth T20I at the same venue in Trivandrum.
