London, July 5 (NationPress) Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur expressed that her team performed well in certain phases but ultimately could not seize control during their narrow five-run defeat to England in the third T20I of the five-match series.
India had a prime chance to clinch the series at 3-0 after triumphing in the first two matches. However, England's bowlers, particularly Lauren Filer, maintained a tight grip during India's chase of 172 runs at The Oval.
“We had the game until the 16th over; we did not capitalize. The dew factor came into play, and while we excelled in patches, there is much for us to learn. The bowlers were exceptional, and our fielders provided great support,” stated Harmanpreet post-match.
England, after a strong start reaching 137 without loss by the 16th over, faltered dramatically, losing nine wickets for just 31 runs in 25 balls. Deepti Sharma and Arundhati Reddy each took three wickets, while Shree Charani added two.
In reply, India seemed set for victory, buoyed by an 85-run opening stand between Smriti Mandhana—who scored a stylish fifty—and Shafali Verma. England's poor fielding further aided India, with several missed chances.
Lauren Filer was the star of England's bowling lineup, delivering impressive pace, particularly in her final over, where she dismissed Mandhana, finishing with figures of 2 for 30. Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Bell, and Issy Wong each contributed a wicket.
“We made a strong comeback after their opening stand. They executed their plans effectively, and we fell short by just one boundary in the end,” said the Indian captain.
Sophia Dunkley was named Player of the Match for her remarkable innings of 75 off 53 balls.
“It was incredible. (referring to her batting with Wyatt-Hodge) We didn’t have the best time during this series. We enjoy batting together and have a strong relationship. (on her performance) There has been a lot of tinkering over the past 18 months, and going out to focus on my game felt great. The atmosphere and crowd were amazing tonight,” she commented.
The fourth T20I of the series is scheduled to take place at Old Trafford on July 9.
