Harmanpreet Singh Emphasizes HIL Ecosystem as a Valuable Opportunity for Youth

Chandigarh, Dec 23 (NationPress) The captain of the Indian men's hockey team, Harmanpreet Singh, who is gearing up to play for Soorma Hockey Club in the upcoming 2024-25 season of the Hockey India League (HIL), has expressed his admiration for the league, describing it as an exceptional opportunity for young athletes involved in the tournament. “HIL serves as an excellent platform. It provides a valuable chance for emerging players to compete alongside experienced seniors and past players. This experience will be crucial for their future roles representing the country,” Harmanpreet shared with IANS.
The HIL is poised for a monumental return following a seven-year absence. Matches will be held at two venues: the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astroturf Hockey Stadium in Ranchi, Jharkhand, and the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela, Odisha.
The sport of hockey is experiencing a remarkable revival in India, highlighted by the men's national team winning consecutive bronze medals at the Tokyo and Paris Olympics. International hockey made a return to the capital after a decade when India hosted Germany for a two-match friendly series at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, attracting large crowds.
As a skipper and drag-flick specialist, Harmanpreet attributes the men’s national team’s recent achievements to this resurgence, noting that the team still has significant aspirations, particularly with the 2026 World Cup in sight. The last World Cup medal for India came in 1975 when they secured their only gold in Kuala Lumpur.
“So far, we have triumphed in all major tournaments. Our success has rekindled public interest and support, just as we experienced during the Paris Olympics,” he remarked.
“The 2026 World Cup holds immense significance for all of us, but there are several important tournaments leading up to it. Winning the Asia Cup is crucial, as it will ensure our qualification for the World Cup. We have numerous objectives for the future, and everyone is motivated to achieve them,” Harmanpreet Singh concluded.
