New Delhi, April 7 (NationPress) Right-handed batter Harry Brook has been named the new captain of the England men’s white-ball teams. Brook takes over from Jos Buttler, who resigned after England's disappointing exit from the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan.

Previously, Brook filled in for an injured Buttler as the captain during an ODI series against Australia in September of last year. He also led England at the 2018 ICC Under-19 Men’s World Cup in New Zealand.

"It’s a significant honor to be appointed as England’s white-ball captain. Since my childhood playing cricket at Burley in Wharfedale, I've aspired to represent Yorkshire, compete for England, and hopefully one day lead the team,” Brook expressed.

“Being given the opportunity to do so now means a lot to me. I extend my gratitude to my family and coaches for their unwavering support. Their faith in me has been invaluable, and I wouldn't be here without them.”

“There is immense talent in this country, and I am eager to get started, progressing towards victories in series, World Cups, and major tournaments. I am excited to fully commit to this role,” said Brook in a statement released by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Monday.

At 26, Brook has been an integral member of England’s white-ball setup since his debut in January 2022 and currently ranks second in the ICC Test rankings. He has participated in 26 ODIs, amassing 816 runs at an average of 34, with a top score of 110.

Brook has also played in 44 T20Is, achieving a highest score of 81, and was part of the squad that clinched the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia under Buttler’s captaincy. Rob Key, Managing Director of England Men’s Cricket, expressed his excitement regarding Brook's new role.

"I am thrilled that Harry Brook has accepted the position of England’s white-ball captain for both formats. He has been involved in our succession planning for a while, although this opportunity has arisen a bit sooner than anticipated.”

"Harry is not just an exceptional cricketer, but he also possesses a sharp cricketing intellect and a clear vision for both teams that will guide us towards winning more series, World Cups, and prestigious global tournaments," he added.

Brook's inaugural assignment as England captain will be a three-match ODI series followed by three T20I matches against the West Indies, commencing on May 29 at Edgbaston. This also marks the beginning of preparations for England leading up to the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in India and Sri Lanka, as well as the 2027 ODI World Cup, set to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
