IPL 2025: Did Harsh Dubey, the most successful bowler of the Ranji season, make a lasting impression on his debut for SRH?

Lucknow, May 19 (NationPress) In the Indian Premier League (IPL), debutant spinners typically do not anticipate bowling the second over of a match. This responsibility usually falls to seasoned spinners during the power-play of a T20 game.

Thus, it was quite a shock for onlookers to witness Sunrisers Hyderabad's captain, Pat Cummins, handing the ball to 22-year-old Harsh Dubey, who had recently stepped in for R Smaran and was participating in his maiden match. With SRH already out of playoff contention, there was little at stake, making this bold choice even more surprising.

However, the left-arm spinner from Pune, who identifies himself as a batting all-rounder, displayed remarkable composure and nearly claimed the wicket of Mitchell Marsh with his very first delivery. Unfortunately, Ishan Kishan was unable to secure the challenging catch.

In his subsequent over, Dubey almost snagged Aiden Markram, enticing him out of his crease with a well-placed delivery, yet Kishan again failed to execute a simple stumping opportunity.

Dubey, who shattered the record for the most wickets in a Ranji Trophy season by capturing 69 wickets during Vidarbha's journey to the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy title, maintained his composure and concluded with figures of 1-44 in four overs.

"I believe I could have performed better. What we accomplished was satisfactory. I expected them to reach 220 runs, but 206 is still respectable. Dropped catches are part of the game; I wasn't dwelling on those missed opportunities," Dubey stated during a mid-innings interview.

When asked to clarify his identity as either a batting all-rounder or a bowler with batting capabilities, Dubey unequivocally defined his expertise.

"It depends on whether we're batting or bowling first! But I see myself as a batting all-rounder. My strategy was to toss the ball and hope it would grip the surface, which worked for the wicket of Marsh," he explained.

He acknowledged that, like any spinner, he would learn as he continued playing in this format, yet he emphasized sticking to his strengths.

"For spinners, the more they compete in a format, the more they learn. My strength lies in turning the ball, so I will stay true to that. However, I will focus on reducing the number of boundaries I concede," Dubey remarked.

Despite missed opportunities off his bowling and conceding three fours and three sixes, Harsh Dubey exhibited great attitude and character, showcasing his true potential. He made a compelling case for earning more opportunities in the IPL next season.
