Christchurch, Nov 7 (NationPress) Matt Henry makes his comeback following an injury as New Zealand unveils its squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against the West Indies, set to kick off at Hagley Oval on November 16.
According to New Zealand Cricket, Henry, who was sidelined for the final two ODIs against England due to a calf strain, is currently engaged in a pre-planned conditioning and rehabilitation program to gear up for both the ODI series and the subsequent three-Test series.
Joining him in the lineup is paceman Blair Tickner, who retains his position following impressive Player of the Match performances in the second and third ODIs against England held in Hamilton and Wellington.
Head coach Rob Walter expressed enthusiasm over Henry's return, stating, “Matt is an essential part of this team and a senior leader within our pace attack, so it’ll be fantastic to have him back for both the ODIs and Tests.”
“He will be fresh and ready after a good rest, and we are confident he’ll be eager to compete in this critical five-week period with both the white and red ball.”
Tickner, who was called up for the first time since 2023, recorded impressive figures of 4-34 and 4-64, contributing significantly to the team’s success in the third ODI in Wellington, marking only their second ODI series victory against England.
Walter noted that Tickner's inclusion was well-deserved after showcasing exceptional performance in Hamilton and Wellington.
“We couldn’t have asked for more from Ticks against England. His energy and pace posed significant challenges for some of the world’s best batters,” he remarked.
Meanwhile, seasoned batter Kane Williamson, who has recently retired from T20Is, will miss the ODI series to concentrate on preparations for the Test series commencing at Hagley Oval on December 2.
Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes, Kyle Jamieson, and Nathan Smith round out a six-member pace bowling group, complemented by captain Mitchell Santner, Michael Bracewell, and Rachin Ravindra providing spin options.
NZC also stated, “Mohammad Abbas (ribs), Finn Allen (foot), Lockie Ferguson (hamstring), Adam Milne (ankle), Will O’Rourke (back), Glenn Phillips (groin), and Ben Sears (hamstring) are all unavailable due to injuries.”
The ODI squad will gather in Christchurch on November 14, ahead of the series opener at Hagley Oval on November 16.
The team aims to extend its streak of 10 consecutive home ODI series victories following last month’s clean sweep of England.
