HIL: Odisha Warriors' Captain Neha Aims to Set a Precedent

New Delhi, Dec 9 (NationPress) Odisha Warriors' captain Neha is gearing up for a historic journey as she guides her team in the inaugural Women’s Hockey India League (HIL) 2024-25. After achieving victory with the Indian squad in the Asian Champions Trophy, Neha is stepping into her captaincy role with renewed vigor and focus for this significant event in Indian hockey.
Reflecting on the importance of the first-ever Women’s HIL, Neha emphasized its value for the upcoming generation of athletes. “We’ve been anticipating a platform like this for years, and now that it’s finally here, it feels incredible. It’s a tremendous opportunity for young girls to display their talents on a national platform. This league will also motivate those who didn’t qualify this year to strive harder for the next season. I’m convinced that the HIL will uncover new talent for the Indian team,” she stated.
Eager to embrace her new role, Neha acknowledged the responsibility that comes with being the captain of the Odisha Warriors. “This is my first major tournament as a captain, and while there’s some pressure, I’m looking forward to the challenge. Having been part of the Indian setup for a while, I know how to rise to the occasion. I’ve always welcomed leadership roles, whether that’s guiding my teammates or making crucial decisions on the field. Our squad comprises experienced and skilled players, so I won’t need to instruct them much. My objective is to lead by example and bring out the best in my team.”
Despite celebrating personal milestones, including her recent marriage, Neha remains committed to balancing her professional and personal life. “Managing both aspects of my life is something I’ve done for years. My marriage doesn’t alter my approach to the game. My husband is extremely supportive and understands how significant hockey is to me. Thus, my primary focus right now is the HIL, and I’m prepared to give it my all,” she explained.
During the HIL auction, Neha was acquired for Rs 10 lakh, highlighting her invaluable contribution to the sport. Although she hasn’t yet decided how to utilize the funds, she aspires to invest in the development of young athletes. “I want to give back in some way, possibly by aiding girls in hockey academies who require financial support,” she shared.
Fresh off her triumph in the Asian Champions Trophy held in Rajgir, Bihar, Neha is bringing the same confidence and determination to the HIL. “Playing in front of a home crowd is always memorable. The energy and support from the fans contributed significantly to our success in Rajgir, and I’m hopeful for a similar atmosphere in the HIL. As a central midfielder, my goal is to support both the offense and defense and assist my team in every aspect,” she added.
As the Women’s HIL is set to transform Indian women’s hockey, Neha offered encouragement to aspiring young players. “My advice to young players is to seize this opportunity and express yourselves on the field. We’ve awaited a league like this for a long time, and it’s finally here. Utilize this platform to work harder, enhance your skills, and shine early in your career.”
