New Delhi, Oct 5 (NationPress) Zileide Cassiano Da Silva from Brazil and Fatma Damla Altin of Turkiye have made history as they became the second and third athletes ever to triumph over Karolina Kucharczyk-Urbanska from Poland in a global women's long jump T20 event, relegating her to a bronze medal at the World Para Athletics Championships held here on Sunday.
Both Zileide and Fatma, who had previously finished behind the Polish athlete at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, found their rhythm and achieved jumps of 5.88m and 5.72m, taking home the gold and silver medals respectively.
The legendary Kucharczyk-Urbanska, who was making her comeback to the World Para Athletics Championships after missing the 2024 event, recorded a jump of 5.55m.
This marks only the third defeat in a global competition for Karolina Kucharczyk-Urbanska across ten global events since her debut in 2011. She has secured gold medals in four World Championships and three Paralympic Games. Despite having surpassed the 6m mark on numerous occasions, an ankle injury has curtailed her performance, leaving her to settle for a bronze this season.
Kucharczyk-Urbanska expressed that the bronze felt akin to gold due to her ongoing ankle issues. She remarked on her determination to fight until the end despite the unfamiliar heat and humidity. “It was a lot of fun today,” she stated. “I fought hard to earn my spot on the podium,” she added.
Interestingly, Mikela Ristoski from Croatia, the only athlete who has previously defeated the Polish jumper at the World Para Athletics Championships in Christchurch in 2011 and the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, was also competing for bronze but could not surpass her renowned rival.
In another exciting development, Lara Baars from the Netherlands set a new World Record in the women’s F40 class shot put, launching the iron ball over 9.77m. The 28-year-old was the only competitor to exceed the 9m mark, breaking her own World Record twice, contributing to the 30th world record set in New Delhi 2025.
Furthermore, on Sunday morning, the Jury of Appeal overturned an earlier decision, reinstating four marks of Brazilian Paulino dos Santos Thiago in the men’s Shot Put F57 final, including a best throw of 14.82m, which earned him the silver medal and pushed India’s Soman Rana to bronze.
India’s medal tally stands at 18, with six medals of each color, placing them seventh in the overall table. The nation's hopes for a higher rank now rest on sprinter Simran Sharma, who will compete in the women's 200m T12 final against Clara Barros Da Silva from Brazil and Alejandra Paola Perez Lopez from Venezuela.
