Diu, May 24 (NationPress) Nagaland has made history by winning a Khelo India Beach Games gold medal in the women’s quad regu sepak takraw team event held in Diu on Friday night. This outstanding achievement has propelled them to finish among the top 3 for the first time in any Khelo India games. Meanwhile, Delhi triumphed over Manipur to secure the gold in the men’s quad regu team competition.
Nagaland concluded their journey at KIBG 2025 in third place, bringing home five gold, three silver, and five bronze medals. Notably, four of Nagaland’s gold medals were earned in pencak silat. Only Manipur and Maharashtra, ranked first and second in the medal tally, secured more silver medals.
As the final whistle sounded, celebrations erupted across Ghoghla beach, setting the stage for a delightful pre-weekend carnival. The Nagaland women’s team faced intense pressure but delivered an exceptional performance, defeating Haryana 2-1 in a nail-biting women’s quad final.
“It was an incredibly dramatic match. Haryana played excellently, but luck was on our side, and we achieved victory,” expressed a thrilled Kethosituo Sekhose, Chef de Mission of Nagaland, in an interview with SAI Media. “This team will now prepare for future competitions, and hopefully, some will be selected for the national team. The overall performance of Nagaland has been remarkable with nearly everyone winning a medal,” he added.
On the other hand, the Delhi men’s team won the quad regu final 2-0 against Manipur, who emerged as the overall champions of KIBG 2025. A vibrant crowd cheered enthusiastically during both the women’s and men’s sepak takraw quad finals, though it was the thrilling women’s final that captivated everyone present.
Seyiekhrieno Tepa, captain of the Nagaland women’s team, expressed her joy, saying, “I’m overjoyed. The match was challenging, but we gave it our all. I am deeply grateful to God, my family, coaches, teammates, and everyone who supported us.”
“The accommodations and arrangements for the Khelo India Beach Games were excellent. We must continue to work hard for upcoming competitions,” she added.
The Nagaland women took an early lead in the first set, achieving a score of 15-6 against Haryana. In the second set, Haryana made a strong comeback, filled with confidence, and the Naga girls struggled with unforced errors, losing the set 7-15. The third set saw Haryana initially gaining points easily.
However, the match shifted in Nagaland's favor after an impressive rally, showcasing incredible aerial maneuvers and ball control from both teams. From trailing 0-4 to leading 5-4, Nagaland turned the match around, and Haryana began to falter. A late technical timeout couldn’t assist the North Indian side as Nagaland maintained their momentum, winning the third set 15-11.
“We made several mistakes, which was disappointing, but we are glad to have played in the final,” said Haryana women’s team captain Monika.
“We committed many unforced errors, handing Nagaland free points. Once they started gaining momentum in the third set, we became nervous, and it didn’t work out for us. Nevertheless, we are happy that the girls won a gold and silver here, and the Haryana boys team also secured a gold,” the 20-year-old added.
Haryana concluded their sepak takraw competitions with gold medals in the women’s team trio and men’s doubles events, along with a silver in the women’s quad regu. Nagaland secured gold in the women’s quad regu, silver in the women’s trio event, and bronze in the women’s team trio.
