Hockey India expands Level-1 coaching programme, certified coaches cross 600 milestone
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hockey India announced on 13 May the next phase of its Coaching Education Pathway Level 1 programme, extending operations to Coimbatore and Haridwar as the federation deepens its investment in grassroots coaching infrastructure. The expansion comes as the initiative has certified over 600 coaches between 2019 and 2026, marking a significant milestone in India's domestic hockey development.
Expansion timeline and registration
Upcoming batches will run in Coimbatore and Haridwar during May and June 2026. Registrations opened on 13 May and close on 17 May. The Level 1 course comprises an eight-hour practical coaching assessment alongside classroom and online assignments before certification is awarded.
Coaching pipeline breakdown
The certified cohort includes 337 Level 1 coaches and 54 Level 2 coaches under the domestic pathway. Additionally, the programme has produced 74 FIH Academy Level 3-certified coaches and 4 Level 4-certified coaches, creating a structured progression toward international standards. Coaches advancing through domestic levels become eligible for official FIH Academy coaching programmes.
Rani Rampal on the pathway's impact
Former Indian captain Rani Rampal, now an FIH Academy Level 3-certified coach, underscored the programme's role in transitioning elite players into coaching roles. Transitioning from a player to a coach is a distinct journey, and the Hockey India Coaching Education Pathway has been absolutely instrumental in that process,
she said. Progressing through the formal levels gave me a much deeper and more structured understanding of modern coaching methodologies, tactical planning, and athlete management.
Rampal, working with the sub-junior team, highlighted how these methodologies accelerate young athlete development. This framework is truly a game-changer. It ensures that coaches across the country speak the same technical language,
she noted, adding that applying international concepts at the developmental stage directly prepares young players for elite competition.
Federation leadership on long-term vision
Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey framed the milestone as foundational to sustained sporting excellence. A robust homegrown coaching structure is the bedrock of any world-class sporting nation,
he said. Passing the milestone of over 600 certified coaches reflects our vision to make Indian hockey self-reliant and technically sound from the grassroots up.
Hockey India secretary general Bhola Nath Singh emphasised regional inclusivity. The expansion of the Coaching Education Pathway into varied regions like Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand highlights our commitment to reaching every corner of the country,
he said, noting the focus on gender equality and channelling international athletes' tactical knowledge back into the domestic pipeline.
Structured pathway design
The coaching education model combines online modules with face-to-face assessments and competency-based evaluations, creating a progression system from grassroots to elite international standards. This architecture ensures technical consistency across India's coaching ecosystem and aligns domestic practices with global benchmarks.
