Holder's inclusion at the right time has transformed GT's balance: Parthiv Patel
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Gujarat Titans assistant coach Parthiv Patel has credited the franchise's auction strategy of prioritizing Jason Holder for transforming the team's balance and performance in IPL 2026. Holder underscored his value with figures of 3-12 in Gujarat's dominant 77-run victory over Rajasthan Royals at Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Saturday, bowling Rajasthan out for 152 in 16.3 overs after Gujarat posted 229/4.
Holder as auction priority
Speaking after the match, Parthiv revealed the depth of Gujarat's commitment to securing the West Indian all-rounder. "When we were planning for the auction, we were okay with not getting any other player, but we were determined to get Jason Holder. We have seen how he has performed over the last 12 to 18 months in T20 cricket around the world. He is an experienced player and also brings leadership qualities with him," Parthiv told Jio Hotstar. The deliberate strategy highlighted how critical Holder's acquisition was to the franchise's balance sheet.
Glenn Phillips and the timing factor
Parthiv also disclosed that Gujarat initially planned to leverage Glenn Phillips' strong form at the start of the tournament. "We wanted to utilise Glenn Phillips' form at the start, but unfortunately, that didn't happen. However, the inclusion of Holder at the right time has turned things around for us," he added. The shift underscored how squad flexibility and mid-tournament adjustments had become as important as the auction blueprint.
Match-simulation strategy for middle order
Beyond personnel, Parthiv highlighted Gujarat's intensive preparation methodology, particularly for batters who may not accumulate sufficient match time during live games. "Most of the conversations with the batters are about scenarios where the opposition bowlers could potentially target them and the kind of fields they could set for a particular batter," he explained. "We practise a lot, especially with the middle order, because they don't always get enough time in matches. We have our B ground, where we try to prepare them as much as possible by putting them in match scenarios."
Complete performance against Rajasthan
Gujarat's win was built on all-round excellence. Captain Shubman Gill scored 84, while Sai Sudharsan contributed 55 to lift Gujarat to 229/4. Rajasthan's teenage opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi provided early fireworks during the powerplay, but Rashid Khan seized control with 4-33, dismantling the middle order. Holder then sealed the victory by claiming three late wickets to wrap up the innings at 152 in 16.3 overs.
Playoff push strengthened
The convincing win further consolidated Gujarat's position in the playoff race, with Holder emerging as the catalyst for both balance and momentum as the tournament enters its decisive phase.
