New Delhi, Dec 28 (NationPress) Irfan Pathan, the former Indian left-arm pacer, has remarked on the intriguing decision of the Gujarat Titans (GT), champions of IPL 2022, to invest in West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder. He emphasized that Holder’s enhanced capability to hit sixes, combined with his proficiency in new-ball bowling, will greatly aid the team in the upcoming 2026 season.
Holder is a well-known figure in the IPL, having played for teams such as Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders, Lucknow Super Giants, and Rajasthan Royals. During the auction in Abu Dhabi, GT aggressively sought after Holder, securing his services for Rs 7 crore after a competitive bidding war with CSK.
Pathan noted, “Their investment in Jason Holder is quite interesting. He excels as a bowler with the new ball, and his batting skills have notably improved, particularly in hitting sixes. GT has shown a lot of confidence in that. The real strength of the team lies in their top three batters: Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler.
“The strategic use of Washington Sundar will also be crucial, as his batting has seen significant improvement. The impact of Glenn Phillips, or whoever occupies the number four or five positions, will be significant,” Pathan commented on JioStar.
Former Indian opener Abhinav Mukund elaborated on GT's choice of left-arm pacers and all-rounders like Holder for their IPL 2026 roster. “Gujarat Titans have a preference for fast bowlers, particularly left-arm pacers such as Prithviraj Yarra and Luke Wood. Ashok Sharma had an impressive season in the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament.
“Jason Holder is essential because they require someone to bat and finish innings at numbers six or seven, while also bowling a few overs. They are looking for a player to finish matches effectively. The top order is so potent that they felt this addition was necessary. Last season, GT frequently did not field all four overseas players,” he explained.
“If Glenn Phillips is fit, he could slot into the middle order while Jason Holder handles the finishing duties. Overall, GT appears to be a formidable team with exceptional young Indian talent. It remains to be seen who will manage them from the bench. Best of luck to Parthiv Patel and Ashish Nehra,” he concluded.
