Mumbai, June 24 (NationPress) With six victories from seven matches, the Hyderabad Heroes have become the first team to qualify for the semifinals of the inaugural season of the Rugby Premier League (RPL). Head coach DJ Forbes expressed that they have accomplished their initial objective.
The Hyderabad Heroes displayed an electrifying performance, reclaiming the top position on the points table after decisively overcoming the Chennai Bulls with a score of 28-7 at the Shahaji Raje Bhosale Sports Complex (Andheri Sports Complex) on Monday.
“It’s thrilling; making the playoffs is the primary goal for any team. It’s fantastic that we’ve achieved this early in the league stage, and hopefully, people can see that we’ve been managing player rotations to give everyone the best opportunity to prepare. While it’s great to be winning, our focus is on preserving our players and figuring out the best combinations as we head into the semifinals,” stated DJ Forbes, head coach of Hyderabad Heroes, regarding their qualification.
In a pivotal match determining which team would secure the first semifinal spot, the Manuel Moreno-led Hyderabad Heroes aimed to regroup after their last game and demonstrate why they previously enjoyed a five-match winning streak. They dominated the Chennai Bulls throughout the quarters, never allowing the Bulls to gain momentum, ultimately achieving a 28-7 victory.
Although the Chennai Bulls scored first, the Hyderabad Heroes appeared nearly invincible, with Javed Hussain and Motu Opetai each scoring a try, while Manuel Moreno successfully converted both. In the final quarter, Wolfram Hacker and Terio Tamani added a try each, with Tamani converting both his attempts, resulting in a commanding win for the Heroes. This victory propels them to the top of the points table, affirming their position as the highest-scoring team with 202 points from the matches played.
After this match, the Hyderabad Heroes also claimed the title for the most tries in the league with 32 tries (led by Joji Nasova and Javed Hussain) and topped the conversions table with 21 conversions (with Terio Temani contributing 13 conversions).
“Playing alongside my teammates who are also Olympians has been an incredible experience. The atmosphere in the dugout is very positive and supportive; all players are eager to assist one another on and off the field. Our success on the field is a direct reflection of that camaraderie. I’m thrilled with the outcome of today’s match and look forward to maintaining this momentum,” said Sambit Pradhan, forward for the Hyderabad Heroes.
While they have secured their semifinal berth, the Hyderabad Heroes still have three more matches against the Chennai Bulls and Delhi Redz (twice) over the next four days to determine their final standing on the points table.
