Navi Mumbai, Nov 3 (NationPress) After stepping in as an injury replacement, opener Shafali Verma proclaimed that God had brought her to achieve something significant for India in the Women's World Cup. Her belief came true on Sunday night when the 21-year-old smashed an impressive 87, marking her first ODI fifty in three years during the World Cup final. Additionally, she contributed with the ball, taking two wickets for 36 runs, leading India to a 52-run victory over South Africa and making history by clinching their inaugural ICC title and third World Cup in the 50-over format.
Shafali became the youngest player to be awarded Player of the Match in a World Cup final, adding to India's impressive tally of five World Cup titles across both men's and women's senior levels in white-ball cricket.
The enthusiastic young player, celebrated for her dynamic stroke-play, expressed her joy after securing the title. "I mentioned at the beginning that God sent me to do something wonderful, and that was evident today. I'm thrilled that we won, and I can't put my feelings into words," Shafali shared with the broadcasters after India's remarkable achievement.
Reflecting on her late entry into the tournament for the semifinals, Shafali revealed she was engaged in a T20 tournament when she received the urgent call to replace the injured Pratika Rawal. She expressed gratitude to her parents, teammates, and friends for their unwavering support.
"It was challenging, but I had faith in myself — if I maintained my composure, I could accomplish everything. My family, friends, and brother were all there for me, guiding my understanding of the game. Winning was crucial for my team, and that was my only goal," Shafali stated.
She emphasized her determination from the outset, adhering to a strategy, while senior players allowed her the freedom to express her natural style. "My mind was clear, and I focused on my plans. I'm so pleased to have executed them successfully, and Smriti di and Harman di, along with others, supported me. The seniors encouraged me to play my game, and clarity is all you need to succeed," she noted.
Shafali was particularly inspired by the presence of her idol Sachin Tendulkar, who watched from the stands. "That was an unforgettable moment. Spotting him gave me an extraordinary boost. I often converse with him, and he instills confidence in me. He is the cricketing legend, and we draw inspiration just from his presence," she added.
