Vadodara, Jan 7 (NationPress) India's star cricketer Virat Kohli received a rousing reception at Vadodara airport on Wednesday, as he arrived in anticipation of the forthcoming ODI series against New Zealand, commencing on January 11, 2026. The first match will take place at the BCA Stadium, Kotambi.
A significant number of fans gathered to greet the cricketing icon, with chants of “Kohli, Kohli” resonating throughout the airport. Despite the tight security measures, chaos ensued when Kohli exited the terminal as fans surged forward to catch a glimpse of him. The cricket legend ultimately required security assistance to safely reach his vehicle.
In addition to Kohli, his teammate Nitish Reddy also made his way to Vadodara, with numerous other players expected to arrive shortly.
Recently, Kohli returned to the Vijay Hazare Trophy, marking his participation in the List A format for the first time in 15 years. The former captain of India has showcased remarkable form, following a stellar performance of 131 runs and a smooth 77 in his two matches. He also crossed the milestone of 16,000 runs in List A cricket, becoming the quickest player to achieve this feat, surpassing the record set by Sachin Tendulkar.
Kohli has been in phenomenal form since returning to international cricket during the Australia tour in October of last year. Although he faced a slow start with two consecutive ducks, his performance has since been nothing short of exceptional. In the recent ODI series against South Africa, Kohli notched up back-to-back centuries, establishing himself as India's top scorer.
He is just 25 runs away from becoming the fastest cricketer to amass 28,000 runs in international cricket. If he surpasses this mark in the first ODI, he will join the ranks of Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara as the third player to reach this significant achievement.
The 37-year-old has accumulated a total of 27,975 runs over 623 innings, boasting 84 centuries and 145 half-centuries. Tendulkar achieved this milestone in his 644th innings, while Sangakkara did so in his 666th.
Kohli also holds a notable record against New Zealand, having scored 1,657 runs in 33 ODIs, which includes nine half-centuries and six centuries.
