Day 3 of the event showcased women’s wrestling, where Indian athletes performed impressively, with Reetika clinching a silver medal, while Muskan and Mansi Lather each earned a bronze medal.
The highlight of the day was Reetika, who achieved India’s first silver medal in this championship. She commenced her journey with a commanding 10-0 triumph over Seoyeon Jeong from South Korea during the qualification round.
In a notable upset, she defeated Japan’s formidable contender, Nodoka Yamamoto, by fall in the semifinal. However, in a tightly contested gold medal match, she narrowly lost 6-7 to Aiperi Medet Kyzy of Kyrgyzstan, settling for silver.
The first bronze medal for India was earned by Muskan (59kg), who began her campaign with a 10-0 victory against Arian G. Carpio from the Philippines but suffered a tough 12-2 defeat against Japan’s Sakura Onishi. Nevertheless, she made a strong comeback in the bronze medal match, defeating Altjin Togtokh from Mongolia 4-0.
The second bronze was claimed by Mansi Lather (68kg), who dominated Sheng F. Cai from Chinese Taipei with a 10-0 win in her opening bout. Although she faced a Japanese opponent in her next match and advanced to the semifinal due to an injury, she lost 1-10 to Zelu Li of China. Unfazed, she fought back in the bronze medal bout, winning 12-2 against Irina Kazyulina from Kazakhstan.
The President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, indicating that Indian wrestling is regaining momentum after a challenging two years.
To date, India has amassed a total of five medals (1 silver and 4 bronze) in this championship. Among these, two bronze medals were secured in the Greco-Roman format, with Sunil Kumar and Nitesh finishing third in the men's 87 kg and 97 kg weight classes respectively.
