Yangon (Myanmar), Aug 6 (NationPress) The India U20 Women’s Team faced a challenging match, ending in a goalless draw against Indonesia at the Thuwunna Stadium on Wednesday, marking their first Group D match in the AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers.
Currently, the Young Tigresses hold one point in the group, which is being led by the hosts, Myanmar, who triumphed over Turkmenistan with a score of 6-1 earlier that day at the same venue.
The game commenced with an intense midfield struggle, as both teams endeavored to dominate the field. India quickly found their rhythm, effectively passing the ball in the opposition's half and generating opportunities, particularly down the wings.
In the sixth minute, Neha’s cross from the left caught the Indonesian defense off guard, with Pooja and Sulanjana Raul in pursuit at the far post. A simple touch could have caused serious trouble for Indonesia’s goalkeeper, Alleana Ayu Arumy, but the ball slipped past everyone.
As the match reached the half-hour mark, Sulanjana and Pooja tested their luck from distance. Sulanjana's shot narrowly missed the target, while Pooja’s attempt was easily handled by Alleana.
After halftime, Neha continued to be a threat down the left side, but Indonesia’s defenders worked together to nullify her impact.
With just over 20 minutes remaining, India intensified their pressure to create panic in the Indonesian defense. Sibani Devi Nongmeikapam intercepted a pass in the attacking third and attempted to set up substitute Babita Kumari, who had entered for Neha, but she failed to connect. A few moments later, Sibani aimed to find Babita again with a cross from the left, but Alleana gathered it without issue.
Indonesia's only significant opportunity came in the 87th minute when substitute Ajeng Sri Handayani broke past the Indian defense and aimed for the far post. However, India’s goalkeeper, Monalisha Devi Moirangthem, made a crucial save, and Thoibisana Chanu Toijam cleared the ball.
In injury time, India had two promising chances from free-kicks delivered by Anju Chanu Kayenpaibam, one from each flank. Although both attempts were on target, the Indonesian goalkeeper managed to deflect them.
Next, the Young Tigresses are set to compete against Turkmenistan at the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon on Friday in their second Group D match of the qualifiers.
