Yangon (Myanmar), Aug 10 (NationPress) — The India U20 women’s national team has made a remarkable achievement by securing their spot in the AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup for the first time in 20 years. This was accomplished after a hard-fought 1-0 victory against the host nation, Myanmar, during their concluding Group D match held at the Thuwunna Stadium on Sunday.
The Young Tigresses topped their group with a total of seven points, thanks to a crucial goal from winger Pooja in the 27th minute, which sparked jubilant celebrations among the fans present at the stadium.
The match unfolded with India controlling the first half, while Myanmar began to find their rhythm in the second half. Just three minutes in, Neha and Sibani Devi Nongmeikapam nearly connected for an early goal, with Neha delivering a cross that Sibani could barely miss.
Although Myanmar faced intense pressure from India, they attempted several counterattacks. In the ninth minute, forward Su Su Khin came close to scoring after receiving a setup from Yin Loon Eain.
As the match progressed, Myanmar gained momentum, but it was India that struck first with Pooja’s goal just before the half-hour mark. Pooja initiated the counterattack, and after a series of passes, she found herself at the right place to nudge the ball into the net.
This goal eased the tension for the Indian team, allowing them to maintain their lead through the end of the first half.
The second half presented a different challenge, as Myanmar, energized by their home crowd, launched a series of attacks. India’s goalkeeper Monalisha Devi showcased her skills with a critical save in the 48th minute to deny Su Su Khin.
India was forced to defend resolutely as Myanmar continued to press. Monalisha, who had previously kept a clean sheet in the tournament, faced another threat with ten minutes remaining when Myanmar substitute Moe Pwint Phyu nearly scored but hit the post instead. The ball teetered on the line before Monalisha made an impressive save.
In a dramatic finish, Phyu hit the woodwork once more in the 90th minute, but India responded swiftly with a counterattack. Sibani's cross found Sulanjana Raul, whose header also struck the bar. Despite the relentless pressure from Myanmar, India held their ground and celebrated their qualification for the first time in two decades.
