Rajgir, Sep 2 (NationPress) The indomitable Indian men's team is primed to face Korea in the inaugural Super 4s clash on Wednesday at the Hockey Asia Cup. Under the leadership of dragflick maestro Harmanpreet Singh, the team has triumphed in their pool stage, defeating China 4-3, Japan 3-2, and Kazakhstan 15-0, thereby securing the top position in Pool A.
In contrast, Korea enters this matchup with a decisive 7-0 victory over Chinese Taipei, coupled with a 1-4 defeat against Malaysia and a 5-1 win against Bangladesh.
Discussing the forthcoming contest, India's head coach Craig Fulton remarked, "Navigating through the pool phase without sustaining any injuries is a significant relief. Particularly in a match like the one we had yesterday (against Kazakhstan), yet two successful games in warm conditions can alter the dynamics when we return to play at night. The team's morale is exceptionally high. Achieving back-to-back wins has rejuvenated everyone.
"We're now gearing up for the next challenge in the tournament. We’ll adopt a fresh strategy for this phase, starting with Korea. We executed some impressive goals against Kazakhstan, maintaining our lead throughout, which was crucial," Fulton elaborated.
When addressing concerns regarding their playing style from the initial three matches, he stated, "We had ample training focused on our areas for improvement. The game against Kazakhstan arrived at an opportune moment, sharpening our focus on the final third. The players are feeling increasingly confident and are developing better synergy, which was somewhat lacking in our previous two games."
In their subsequent Super 4s encounter on September 4, India will challenge Malaysia, the top team from Pool B and the finalists of the last Asia Cup in Jakarta 2022. Their final Super 4s match is scheduled against China on September 6.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh shared his thoughts on the Super 4s, stating, "Every opponent in this tournament poses a significant challenge. While we haven't faced Malaysia and Korea frequently over the past year, we did have a productive practice match against Malaysia before the tournament. Our experience with China also prepares us well. We adapt quickly, which is beneficial. As we face teams multiple times, it enhances our preparation. Our sole focus remains on one game at a time against Korea."
