New Delhi, July 21 (NationPress) Former England fast bowler Steve Harmison suggests that India may contemplate fielding three spinners in their lineup for the fourth Test against England in Manchester, commencing Wednesday. Previously, India deployed two spinners - Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar - in their last two matches at Edgbaston and Lord's. The outcome at Edgbaston favored India, while they narrowly fell short by 22 runs at Lord's, trailing 1-2 in the five-match series.
With the series at stake, Harmison endorsed the Shubman Gill-led squad to incorporate Kuldeep Yadav in their playing XI at Old Trafford amidst rainy conditions.
“If rain is likely anywhere in England, it’s usually in Manchester, especially since it hasn't rained here for nearly three months. If there was ever a venue to consider employing two or even three spinners, it’s certainly Manchester. England might not take this path; they have Liam Dawson, but India could explore this option. I anticipate a pitch akin to what we witnessed at Edgbaston and Lord's, one that will deteriorate as the match advances and provide turn later on. However, I don't foresee much pace or bounce, which could lead to another low-scoring match,” Harmison remarked on JioHotstar’s ‘Follow The Blues’.
“The pitch for the fourth Test may not favor Kuldeep's bounce, but it will offer spin as the match unfolds. Given that the last three Tests extended into the fifth day, India must earnestly contemplate fielding a second or even a third spinner. Currently, their team composition appears well-rounded, yet the challenge lies in accommodating Kuldeep Yadav. Dropping either Washington Sundar or Ravindra Jadeja seems unthinkable,” he stated.
“Thus, can they field three spinners? That would be a significant decision, particularly regarding Jasprit Bumrah's situation. Selecting Kuldeep could be a wise choice, but fitting him in poses a dilemma. A tough choice may need to be made - is it Sundar who sits out? I certainly wouldn’t want to be in that position,” he concluded.
