New Delhi, Sep 25 (NationPress) India made an impressive entrance to their ISSF Junior World Cup journey on Thursday, as the women shooters dominated the 50m rifle prone event, securing all three podium positions. Meanwhile, the men contributed with a silver and bronze on the event's first day at the Dr. Karni Singh Ranges.
Continuing her remarkable performance from the Asian Championships held in Kazakhstan earlier this month, young Anushka Thokur claimed the women’s title with an impressive score of 621.6. The 18-year-old had recently achieved junior gold in the 50m rifle 3 positions and demonstrated similar composure in this non-Olympic event.
Close on her heels was fellow shooter Anshika, also 18, who notched a score of 619.2 to earn silver, while 20-year-old Aadhya Agrawal secured bronze with 615.9, marking a remarkable clean sweep for the home team.
The men's event also brought accolades for India, with Deependra Singh Shekhawat and Rohit Kanyan clinching their first international medals. Deependra, who had competed in the 50m rifle 3 positions at the Asian Championships, shot 617.9 across six series of 10 shots each to finish in second place. Rohit captured bronze with a score of 616.3.
The gold medal went to Individual Neutral Athlete (AIN) competitor Kamil Nuriakhmetov, who scored 618.9 in the competition featuring 11 shooters.
Among other Indian participants, Nitin Waghmare (615.6) — a bronze medallist at the Kazakhstan Asian Championships — finished fifth, while Kushagra Singh (611.6) and Kunal Sharma (590.9) placed eighth and eleventh respectively.
With five medals on the first day, India showcased their dominance on home soil. The competition is set to become more intense on Friday as Olympic disciplines commence, with the men’s and women’s 10m air pistol finals on the agenda.
