New Delhi, Dec 8 (NationPress) Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel expressed concern over how the team will manage Jasprit Bumrah’s overs in the forthcoming T20I series against South Africa, which begins in Cuttack on Tuesday.
In T20I matches this year, India has predominantly deployed Bumrah during the powerplay phases, resulting in limited usage towards the end of innings. “This series holds great significance for India, particularly against the World Cup runners-up, South Africa. It serves as excellent preparation. I’m eager to see how India deploys Jasprit Bumrah,” Patel noted on JioStar.
“Since the Asia Cup, India has opted for his three overs in the powerplay, a tactic also observed during the tour of Australia. If Bumrah bowls three overs early on, he will only have one left for the death overs, specifically the 19th over. Therefore, India must strategize his usage carefully. Should they choose to bowl him for three overs initially, Arshdeep Singh should support Bumrah in the death overs,” he elaborated.
Regarding the return of Hardik Pandya, who has recovered from a quadriceps injury sustained during the Asia Cup, Patel emphasized his return as a pivotal element for the Indian team as they finalize preparations for the T20 World Cup.
“The return of Hardik Pandya is crucial. He performed exceptionally in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and is regaining his form, making him a vital asset. He contributes significantly with both bat and ball. His experience is invaluable, especially in guiding the younger players. I eagerly anticipate his return,” he stated.
Left-handed opener Abhishek Sharma has transitioned his international form into the domestic arena, amassing 304 runs at an average of 50.66, with a strike rate exceeding 249 for Punjab in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, including a stunning 148 off just 52 balls against Bengal.
“Abhishek Sharma has been the standout player this season, accumulating runs and hitting numerous sixes. Will he maintain this form? I believe he can. He was the top scorer in the Asia Cup and during the tour of Australia. Currently, he ranks as the number one T20I batter. His contributions at the top order are vital for India’s success in this five-match series against South Africa,” Patel concluded.
