New Delhi, Nov 6 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Stuart Binny and ex-Karnataka batter Bharat Chipli expressed their admiration for the Harmanpreet Kaur-led team that triumphed in the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup. They emphasized that the entire team has become significant sources of inspiration across the nation, demonstrating that sport is not solely for men.
The team, under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur, secured the championship for the first time by defeating South Africa by 52 runs in the final at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai. Following their victory, the squad visited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu in New Delhi.
“I can’t express how proud I am of that Indian team. All my joy goes to the entire women’s setup. They have shown that sport is a space for everyone. The whole team has made not just me but all of us who play for our countries or clubs feel incredibly proud. Watching those women compete like that is truly inspiring, and we are ecstatic that India has clinched the World Cup,” Binny stated in a special interaction with IANS, as the upcoming Hong Kong Sixes tournament approaches.
Chipli acknowledged the supportive environment created around women’s cricket—particularly the Women’s Premier League (WPL)—for contributing to the team’s success at this prestigious event. “I must commend the BCCI, ICC, and WPL for their roles. Just like the IPL, many cricketers have the opportunity to play alongside top global talents, leading to immense learning opportunities.
“All these aspects culminated in winning this tournament. This is the first time women’s cricket has claimed the World Cup, akin to 1983 for men’s cricket—it has inspired millions. I hope it encourages countless girls in India to take up the sport, as women’s cricket continues to grow,” he added.
Binny, whose wife Mayanti presented India’s campaign on television during the World Cup, further highlighted the significance of this momentous victory as a shift in perception and equality. “It’s not just about increasing participation; it’s about women taking the sport seriously. Our girls who won the World Cup have proven that Indian women's cricket is on par with men's cricket. They’ve demonstrated this through their victory.”
“They’ve achieved remarkable records and successes. We’ve both provided expert commentary on the World Cup and related events. Yet, at the end of the day, it’s those girls who deserve the accolades. I believe Indian women's cricket is in excellent hands, and the only way is up.”
Reflecting on the team’s interactions with Prime Minister Modi and President Murmu, Binny remarked that their recognition is well-earned. “It’s essential to remember that we wear two significant symbols: the Indian flag on our shirts and our names on the back. These girls deserve to meet the prominent figures they are engaging with today. They have every right to celebrate this victory, showcasing the pride our country feels for these girls who have won a World Cup.”
“This victory is monumental; it’s the first World Cup win for the women’s team, which has taken a long time to achieve. While we’ve always excelled in men’s cricket, it’s gratifying for them to meet such esteemed individuals now—they truly deserve it.”
“This is an emotional day for the girls and the nation. They have every right to enjoy this achievement and receive the affection they merit,” he concluded.
Chipli shared similar sentiments, emphasizing the dedication behind the triumph. “They have played in this World Cup for many years without success, making this victory monumental. The years of hard work have culminated in this moment—the entire setup deserves 100% of the credit.”
