New Delhi, May 19 (NationPress) As the second half of the FIH Hockey Pro League 2024-25 draws near, Harendra Singh, the head coach of the Indian women’s hockey team, is paving the way for his squad, which currently holds the sixth position on the points table.
Harendra believes that the Indian team's performance during the home leg of the FIH Pro League was commendable, and they are gearing up to face formidable rivals in Europe.
"The upcoming FIH Hockey Pro League matches in Europe will pit the Indian women’s hockey team against tough competition, and the team is undoubtedly prepared for it. Our participation in the FIH Hockey Pro League in Europe follows our tour in Australia, which is an excellent preparatory phase, as both match-practice and game time are invaluable for any team," Harendra stated in an interview with the FIH as they prepare for the next phase of the Pro League.
Harendra noted that his players' experience from the home leg, particularly their significant shootout victory against the World No.1 and Olympic champion Netherlands, will be beneficial.
"The team performed admirably in the home leg. The shootout win against the Netherlands served as a tremendous confidence boost. As we head into the European leg, the insights and experiences gained will undoubtedly aid the team. We will play in three diverse venues: London, Antwerp, and Berlin, and the team is diligently working to prepare," he added.
With India scheduled to compete against Australia, Argentina, Belgium, and China in the Pro League, Harendra expressed optimism that transitioning from the Australian tour directly into the FIH Pro League would be advantageous.
"Coming off the Australian tour and immediately entering the FIH Pro League will certainly benefit us, but the matches in Europe will present a different challenge altogether.
"Australia, Argentina, Belgium, and China are all exceptional teams, and we are not underestimating any of them, regardless of circumstances. Our preparations for the FIH Hockey Pro League are progressing well, and we will continue striving towards our objectives," Harendra remarked.
The coach of the Indian women’s team is tasked with enhancing their position in the league and ensuring their presence in elite competitions. The team has lost momentum since their successful run at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020, and remaining in the FIH Pro League will provide them with more opportunities to compete against top-tier opponents in the future and regain their former standing.
