Chengdu (China), Aug 7 (NationPress) The Indian compound archery mixed team, featuring Madhura Dhamangaonkar and seasoned athlete Abhishek Verma, emerged as the top qualifiers, securing the first seed at the World Games held here on Thursday.
Madhura, who triumphed at the World Cup stage in Shanghai earlier this year, dominated the women's category for a significant portion of the afternoon. However, she slipped to third place in the women's individual standings by the end, while Abhishek settled for fifth in the men's individual.
Nonetheless, Madhura's score of 705 in third place, combined with Abhishek's score of 710 in fifth, gives India a total of 1415, placing them in a strong position ahead of the mixed team competition on Friday. They will face the young Korean duo, Moon Yeeun and Lee Eunho, in their opening match.
Another Indian competitor, Parneet Kaur, secured the 12th position in the individual qualifications and will compete against South Africa's Jeanine Van Kradenburg, who finished in 21st place.
In the men's individual category, Rishabh Yadav (707) and Rakesh Kumar (699) ranked 10th and 19th, respectively. Rishabh will commence the main round against America's Riku Van Tonder, while Rakesh faces off against Batuhan Akcaoglu from Turkey.
In other news, Mike Schloesser and Andrea Becerra achieved top seeds in the men's and women's divisions, respectively.
Schloesser, aiming for his inaugural World Games title after a rollercoaster season, scored 715 with 43x. Having won multiple major titles over the years, this marks Schloesser's third attempt at the elusive World Games gold medal. In his last outing at Birmingham 2022, he was eliminated by Abhishek Verma in the quarterfinals.
On the women's side, Mexico's Andrea topped the rankings with a score of 706 and 27x, narrowly ahead of the USA's Alexis Ruiz, who finished second, and India's Madhura in third.
Meanwhile, defending champion Ella Gibson struggled, concluding her session in ninth place with a score of 699. This result necessitates an additional match tomorrow against Namibia's Elisabeth Taljaard.
