Birmingham, July 6 (NationPress) Following his inaugural win as India’s Test captain, leading to a remarkable 336-run victory against England at Edgbaston, Shubman Gill praised his team’s exceptional resilience, particularly in the areas of bowling and fielding.
After a five-wicket loss in Leeds, India’s bowling and fielding had faced criticism. However, in Birmingham, even without Jasprit Bumrah, the bowling unit excelled, highlighted by Akash Deep's impressive ten-wicket match haul, which included 6-99 on the final day.
The fielders also performed admirably, executing crucial catches and supporting the bowlers effectively, despite a few missed opportunities. With this victory, India has leveled the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series at 1-1.
"We addressed the issues from our last match, and we executed our plans perfectly. The way we recovered in our bowling and fielding was remarkable. On this type of wicket, we recognized that scoring 400-500 runs would be sufficient. Not every game will mirror Headingley," Gill remarked during the post-match presentation, where he was awarded Player of the Match.
Reflecting on the bowling unit, Gill stated, "They were outstanding. Our ability to dismantle their top order was impressive. Even Prasidh didn’t take as many wickets, but he bowled exceptionally. Akash hit the right lengths and made the ball move both ways, which was challenging on this pitch. He was phenomenal for us."
Gill also confirmed that Bumrah will return for the third Test at Lord’s, commencing on July 10. "Bumrah will definitely be back for the Lord's Test. I'm thrilled; it's the most iconic stadium, and it’s a great honor to represent my country there."
Gill had an outstanding performance at Edgbaston, scoring 269 and 161 in both innings—an unprecedented achievement in Test cricket. "I'm feeling quite at ease with my game, and if my contributions help us win the series, that would be fantastic," he added.
"As I’ve mentioned before, I aim to play as a batsman and make decisions from that perspective. At times, you might hesitate to take risks when thinking like a captain, which is crucial for a batsman," he concluded.
