The young team, led by Shubman Gill, leveled the Anderson Tendulkar Trophy by clinching the second Test by an impressive 336 runs.
Jay Shah, the ICC Chairman, praised Gill’s batting performances, labeling them as ‘innings of extraordinary quality’ and expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming third Test at Lord’s starting July 10.
“An exceptional Test match exemplifying the depth and tenacity of Indian cricket. @ShubmanGill’s scores of 269 and 161 were innings of extraordinary quality, while Akashdeep’s 10-wicket haul marked a standout performance. The contributions from @imjadeja and @RishabhPant17 were vital to this well-deserved team victory. Eagerly anticipating the next match at Lord’s,” Shah shared on ‘X’.
Following a five-wicket loss in Leeds, India’s bowling and fielding faced criticism. However, in Birmingham, despite the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, the bowling unit excelled, highlighted by Akash Deep’s remarkable match haul of ten wickets, including a stunning 6-99 on the final day.
Sachin Tendulkar commended India’s approach to secure a result and level the series 1-1 in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
“What a Shubmarine innings from the man of the moment! Congratulations @ShubmanGill on leading India to a spectacular Test victory! @RishabhPant17, @klrahul, and @imjadeja performed admirably, particularly in the second innings. India’s strategy was to push England out of the game, ensuring there was only one winner.
“The length the bowlers maintained was particularly impressive. Akash Deep was the standout bowler, and in my view, he bowled the delivery of the series to Joe Root,” Tendulkar stated.
Virat Kohli, who retired from Test cricket prior to the series, also praised the team for their outstanding performance.
“Fantastic victory for India at Edgbaston. They were fearless and constantly pressured England. Brilliantly led by Shubman both with the bat and in the field, alongside impactful performances from everyone. Special mention to Siraj and Akash for their exceptional bowling on this pitch. 👏🇮🇳 @ShubmanGill @mdsirajofficial #AkashDeep,” Kohli shared.
Akash Deep, stepping in for Bumrah in this match, delivered a stellar fast bowling performance, troubling batters on a flat pitch, ultimately bowling England out for 271 on the final day with ample time remaining.
Yuvraj Singh remarked that the young bowler was ‘fearless and unplayable throughout the five days.
“Winning a Test in England requires heart during tough situations! With no @Jaspritbumrah93, away from home, and backs against the wall, the team still found a way! #AkashDeep was fearless and unplayable, while @ShubmanGill displayed maturity beyond his years! That’s the type of win you cherish. On to the next match to seize the series, boys,” Yuvraj noted.
VVS Laxman, head of BCCI's Centre of Excellence, praised India’s ‘fighting spirit and resilience.’
“Kudos to Team India on an exceptional victory! It was inspiring to witness the team's fighting spirit and resilience. Congratulations Shubman on a remarkable match with the bat and for leading the team with such grace. A fantastic start to your captaincy. Also, commendable efforts from Siraj and Akashdeep.
