New Delhi, July 10 (NationPress) Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan has commended the young Indian squad for their outstanding performance in the current Test series against England, particularly following their historic win at Edgbaston—marking India's first triumph at this venue in 58 years. “Firstly, I want to extend my congratulations to the entire team for achieving victory at Edgbaston after 58 long years—a remarkable feat. The manner in which the boys made a comeback in the second Test displayed true character and resilience,” Dhawan expressed in an exclusive interview with IANS.
Emphasizing individual excellence, Dhawan specifically acknowledged Shubman Gill, who has been in exceptional form throughout the series.
“Shubman Gill has been leading from the front with remarkable innings of 269 and 161, excellently complemented by Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep with the ball, particularly in the absence of Bumrah. Even though we lost the first Test, there were many positives, as Gill scored a commendable 147, while Rishabh Pant showcased his skills with two centuries—134 and 118—demonstrating great maturity and adaptability in challenging English conditions,” Dhawan noted.
He also praised senior players KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal for establishing a strong base in the first Test, each scoring centuries.
“KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal contributed with fluent centuries, setting the stage for an impressive batting display. Achieving five centuries in a single match on English soil is no small achievement. Jasprit Bumrah was also instrumental, taking a five-wicket haul and keeping the English batsmen under constant pressure,” added the former opener.
With each team having one victory in the series so far, Dhawan believes that India now holds the momentum.
“The team clearly learned from their initial match and returned stronger in the second. Both Tests have been thrilling and filled with high-quality cricket. It will be intriguing to see how England reacts. Following the second Test, the pressure appears to be shifting—indicating a positive sign for India as they advance,” he concluded.
