Birmingham, July 11 (NationPress) Following India's historic achievement of clinching their first women's T20I series victory in England at Manchester, they are poised to conclude the series with an impressive 4-1 result as they prepare for the final match at Edgbaston on Saturday.
A notable highlight of India's success in England has been the bowlers effectively utilizing a spin-heavy approach, supported by a strategic selection of six bowlers for the team led by Harmanpreet Kaur. Munish Bali, the fielding coach for India, remarked that the implementation of a six-bowler strategy was influenced by the presence of all-rounders who can contribute valuable runs with the bat.
“All our bowlers are capable of batting as well, which is why we adopted this six-bowler strategy. It has proven beneficial for us. If a player has an off day or if one of our six bowling options falters, particularly with all-rounders like Amanjot, Sneh Rana, Radha, and Deepti, we have opted for more spinners,” Bali explained.
“Our spinners have been our backbone from the beginning, and we have consistently supported them. We are aware of the experience brought by spinners like Sneh Rana and Deepti, along with Radha. Therefore, we have adhered to our greatest strengths,” Bali added during a pre-match press conference on Friday.
India's commendable fielding performance, especially during their series-clinching win by six wickets at Old Trafford, has received widespread acclaim, with Radha and Arundhati Reddy standing out for their exceptional catches.
Bali credited the team's near-perfect fielding displays, evident during their ODI tri-series triumph in Sri Lanka, to the dedication exhibited during two weeks of training camps at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru before heading to England.
“These players are eager to become a formidable fielding side, and we share that ambition. They consistently strive for excellence, displaying the same intensity during practice sessions as they do on the field. I am pleased with our progress, but we still have a long journey ahead,” he said.
“During our CoE camp, we focused on specific skills in high catching, ground fielding, and fitness to enhance our athleticism. We engaged in high catching drills, direct hit drills, and ground fielding exercises to refine our skills. Our goal is continuous improvement,” he elaborated.
When asked about efforts to optimize fielding angles, Bali clarified, “Cutting angles means approaching the ball effectively. You need to take the shortest route to get to the ball, whether you are along the boundary or in the inner circle.”
“We conducted numerous drills on how quickly we can reach the ball. To achieve this, we need to be exceptional athletes, which we focused on with our fitness trainer, and it has paid off significantly for us,” he stated.
The vision of transforming India into a strong fielding team is starting to materialize in England. This goal has been a priority for Bali, head coach Amol Muzumdar, and captain Harmanpreet, who has consistently emphasized it in previous press conferences.
Bali also praised young left-arm spinner N. Shree Charani for her significant improvement in fielding since joining the national setup. “Everyone is performing well, but I am particularly impressed with Shree Charani. As a young talent, she takes extra catches and is doing exceptionally well. She made a remarkable catch in the second T20I and even executed a run-out. Her movement on the field is commendable, and I am very pleased with her development,” he remarked.
He concluded by commending Richa Ghosh for her commitment to enhancing her wicketkeeping skills. So far in England, Richa has achieved four catches and two stumpings. “Richa is incredibly dedicated. Let me emphasize her excellent work ethic. She consistently adheres to her keeping routines. The more effort she invests, the better she becomes,” he said.
“During the camps, she focused intensely on her keeping, specifically her stance and hand-eye coordination. Her hard work is evident, and with regular practice, she continues to improve.”
