New Delhi, July 22 (NationPress) Following Italy's historic qualification for the 2026 T20 World Cup, captain Joe Burns praised the extensive behind-the-scenes efforts, yet highlighted that this is merely the start of their larger objectives.

Burns, who has a background as a former Australian Test cricketer and qualifies for the Italian team through his family roots, described the achievement as “surreal”.

“I’m extremely proud of this group,” Burns shared with ICC Digital. “A significant amount of planning and preparation was involved. Thus, it’s gratifying from both the cricketing and organizational perspective.”

This meticulous planning involved conducting rigorous training camps in Rome and the UK, showcasing their dedication to readiness. “I told the team on the first day in Rome, ‘Whether we’re up against Luxembourg in the initial Sub-Regional match or India in a World Cup Final, I want us to be the most prepared team in world cricket,’” Burns remarked.

Their strategic prowess shone during the European Regional Final held in Voorburg. After impressive victories and a key upset against Scotland, Italy faced off against the tournament hosts, the Netherlands. Even in their loss, Burns adapted the strategy mid-match to ensure qualification.

“It felt like there were two games in one,” Burns reflected. “They had the upper hand in the first 10 overs… After that, we just needed to set a score that we could defend… I was confident that our spinners, who performed so well during the tournament, would help us regain control once we got out of the Powerplay.”

Players like Crishan Kalugamage and Ben Manenti played crucial roles in restoring control during that match. While the players excelled on the field, the invaluable contributions from the coaching staff behind the scenes were equally essential.

Head coach John Davidson leads a team that includes seasoned cricket professionals like Dougie Brown and Irish cricket legend Kevin O’Brien. O’Brien, who joined in 2022, has witnessed the team's significant transformation. “I’ve observed a group of players who have matured and bonded into a cohesive unit,” he remarked. “The shared connection among this squad is their Italian heritage.”

O’Brien commended Burns’ commitment. “Joe was thoroughly prepared. He was devoted 24/7 to this qualification tournament,” he stated.

In turn, Burns praised the coaching staff’s experience in navigating the Associate cricket landscape. “These individuals have traveled that road… The insights they provide to the group, stemming from the Associate pathway, are invaluable.”

As Italy gears up to compete against teams like India and Sri Lanka at the upcoming T20 World Cup, Burns is eager for the challenge. “As you approach your first World Cup, you want to showcase your skills on the grand stage. I would love to play against India in the opening match in India.”
