Ipoh, Nov 22 (NationPress) The Indian men’s hockey squad is all set to kick off their journey in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2025 in Ipoh, Malaysia, from November 23 to 30. With five tournament victories under their belt, India ranks as the second-most successful team in this prestigious event, making their long-awaited return since finishing as runners-up in 2019.

This year marks the 31st edition of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, renowned as one of the globe's elite invitational hockey competitions. The tournament will showcase teams such as India, Belgium, Canada, Korea, New Zealand, and the host nation, Malaysia, competing in a round-robin format, where the top two teams will advance to the final.

Under the leadership of Captain Sanjay, the Indian team is set to face Korea on November 23. Following that, they will play against Belgium on November 24, host Malaysia on November 26, and New Zealand on November 27, wrapping up their league games against Canada on November 29.

As the team prepares for the 2026 FIH Men's Hockey World Cup and the 2026 Asian Games next year, this tournament serves as a vital platform for competitive practice and experimentation with new strategies.

The roster includes goalkeepers Pawan and Mohith HS, while the defense features Poovanna Chandura Boby, Nilam Sanjeep Xess, Yashdeep Siwach, Jugraj Singh, Amit Rohidas, and Captain Sanjay.

In midfield, Rajinder Singh, Raj Kumar Pal, Nilakanta Sharma, Rabichandra Singh Moirangthem, Vivek Sagar Prasad, and Mohammed Raheel Mouseen will play crucial roles, while the forward line consists of Sukhjeet Singh, Shilanand Lakra, Selvam Karthi, Aditya Arjun Lalage, Dilpreet Singh, and Abhishek.

Before the tournament, Coach Craig Fulton led the Indian team through a rigorous training camp in Bengaluru. Discussing the team's preparations, Captain Sanjay stated, “We’ve engaged in extensive preparations aimed at honing specific areas we identified. This competitive tournament gives us the chance to challenge ourselves against strong international teams, and we’re eager to start strong.”

“Our squad boasts a strong mix of youth and experience, and the atmosphere is incredibly positive. Our preparation has clarified everyone’s roles and responsibilities. Now, we aim to deliver consistent performances and contend for the title,” he added.
