Jakarta (Indonesia), July 8 (NationPress) — Indonesia is preparing to welcome the 2025 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, scheduled to occur in Senayan, Jakarta, from October 19 to 25, as confirmed by the chair of the Indonesian Gymnastics Federation, Ita Yuliati, on Tuesday.
As of now, a remarkable total of 86 countries and regions have signed up for the 53rd edition of the championships, setting a new record, according to Ita.
“Typically, this world championship sees participation from about 70 countries [and regions], but this year, we have already achieved registrations from 86 countries [and regions]. This is a record in itself,” she remarked.
The event is expected to feature more than 600 athletes from around the world competing in this prestigious international tournament, as reported by Xinhua. This will mark the first occasion for Indonesia, and any Southeast Asian nation, to host such an event.
As the host country, Indonesia is diligently enhancing all facets of its preparations, including venue readiness, technical logistics, budgeting, and training camps for the national team, Ita noted.
The World Artistic Gymnastics Championships are held annually, showcasing both men’s and women’s competitions. The inaugural championships occurred in 1903, originally for male gymnasts, followed by the women's events starting in 1934.
These championships are considered a pivotal event in the gymnastics calendar, providing a platform for athletes to vie for world titles and Olympic qualification. The most recent edition took place in 2023 in Antwerp, Belgium.
Organized in the year following the Olympic Games, the World Championships do not include team competitions, allowing individual gymnasts to shine on the global stage. Countries can register up to six male and four female competitors for the event in Jakarta, with a maximum of three gymnasts per apparatus.
A total of ten apparatus titles—six for men and four for women—will be contested, and new All-Around champions for both genders will be crowned. Individual qualifications will unfold over three days, with approximately eight subdivisions of the men’s competition on October 19 and 20, and ten subdivisions for women on October 20 and 21. The All-Around finals for both men and women are slated for October 22 and 23, followed by two days of apparatus finals.
