Ahmedabad, April 19 (NationPress) Jos Buttler, who was named Player of the Match after scoring an unbeaten 97 runs, observed from the non-striker's end as Rahul Tewatia smashed a six and a four off the first two balls of the final over, securing Gujarat Titans’ seven-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.
Despite not reaching his century, Buttler's remarkable innings of 97 off 54 balls was crucial for his team, especially under the tough weather conditions. His performance included 11 boundaries and four sixes, all while battling cramps.
During the award presentation, Buttler shared that he told Tewatia not to focus on his own score and acknowledged the challenging heatwave that made the game difficult.
"I’m really happy with the two points. It was a fantastic wicket to bat on; I aimed to take it deep and choose the right moments to attack. We formed some solid partnerships along the way. The heat was surprising, you need a lot of fluids, and it’s exhausting. Cramping is part of the game; you have to be fit and perform under pressure and heat," Buttler mentioned in the post-match ceremony.
"Winning is what matters; I had my opportunities before that. The two points are the priority. I told Rahul not to stress about my score; we need to secure the win. He has consistently performed well over the last few years and can hit boundaries from the first ball," he added.
This victory propelled Gujarat to the top of the IPL points table due to their superior run rate compared to Delhi, marking them as the first team to chase down a 200+ total against this franchise.
Alongside Buttler, Sai Sudharsan appeared to be in fine form, scoring 36 runs off 21 balls with five boundaries and one six before being dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav in the eighth over.
Sudharsan reflected on the importance of the two points and the opportunity to play alongside Buttler.
“The pitch was excellent for batting in the first six overs. The ball was coming onto the bat nicely. Timing is crucial, and it requires preparation. Watching Buttler play is incredible; I’m learning a lot from him. Winning two points every game is the ultimate goal,” Sudharsan stated.
