New Delhi, Jan 3 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Madan Lal has expressed his support for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after the board instructed the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladesh player Mustafizur Rahman. He noted that the officials surely grasp the situation and must have made an informed decision following extensive discussions.
On Saturday, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia announced that KKR has been directed to part ways with the Bangladeshi fast bowler before the upcoming IPL 2026 season, thereby concluding weeks of speculation surrounding his high-profile acquisition. The decision follows backlash concerning violent incidents against the Hindu community in Bangladesh during December, triggering criticism regarding Rahman's participation in the tournament.
“I am confident that the BCCI's decision was made after careful consideration of public sentiment. They might have also consulted with the government. Whether this decision is right or wrong is debatable, but the BCCI is well aware of the situation. India played a vital role in Bangladesh's independence, and the violence against our Hindu brethren is completely unacceptable. It is time for the people of Bangladesh to introspect,” stated Lal, a member of India's victorious 1983 World Cup team, in an interview with IANS.
Rahman gained considerable attention after KKR secured him for a staggering Rs 9.20 crore at the December mini-auction, marking him as the most expensive Bangladeshi cricketer in IPL history. He was acquired from an initial price of Rs 2 crore following a heated bidding war involving Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals.
At this time, KKR has not released any official comment regarding the BCCI's decision, but compliance is expected before the season kicks off.
Previously, spiritual leader Devkinandan Thakur and several others voiced their disapproval of KKR and its co-owner, Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, for signing Rahman. Thakur mentioned that followers of Sanatan Dharma, particularly Hindus, were outraged by KKR's choice given the ongoing atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh.
