New Delhi, July 1 (NationPress) As questions arise regarding Jasprit Bumrah's availability for the second Test against England at Edgbaston, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has expressed his support for Akash Deep as the perfect substitute.
India is focused on managing Bumrah's workload throughout the five-match series, and Pathan suggests that Deep's bowling style could be advantageous in English conditions.
“If Bumrah is absent, who should step into the lineup? From what I've observed in practice, Akash Deep appears to be finding his rhythm. I believe he is the type of bowler akin to Mohammed Shami,” Pathan mentioned on his YouTube channel.
In the first Test at Headingley, India’s bowlers, aside from Bumrah, faced challenges as England successfully chased 371 runs to secure a five-wicket victory, despite remarkable centuries from Rishabh Pant and first-innings hundreds from Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Pathan elaborated on why Akash Deep could be impactful, emphasizing his ability to focus on seam and swing, contrasting with bowlers like Mohammed Siraj or Prasidh Krishna who tend to pitch the ball more aggressively.
“His straight seam deliveries can challenge the England batsmen, particularly with late movement. An aggressive approach could pose issues. While we can consider Arshdeep, if Bumrah isn't playing, it should be Akash Deep stepping in,” he added.
Simultaneously, India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate conveyed the management's belief in the team's capability to perform well even in Bumrah's absence.
“It is a challenge, but we are confident we can level the series or maintain a 1-0 lead without Jasprit. However, we also recognize the importance of having him available later in the series. We must decide when to deploy our strongest lineup,” ten Doeschate remarked, indicating that Bumrah's availability would be determined on match day.
